\"30-second<\/a><\/p>\n

The popular series of \u201c30-second\u201d books from Ivy Press has been running for several years now. Next month sees the latest in the sub-series of physics-related titles edited by Brian Clegg. This is 30-second Energy<\/em>, following on from 30-second Quantum Theory<\/em>, 30-second Physics<\/em>, 30-second Newton<\/em> and 30-second Einstein<\/em>. As with those earlier books, 30-second Energy<\/em> includes contributions from myself as well as from Brian and several other authors.<\/p>\n

30-second Energy<\/em> is a slight departure from the previous titles in that it’s more about practical applications of physics than theory or academic research. That means that (as with virtually anything \u201cuseful\u201d that comes out of physics), many people won\u2019t even realize that it is<\/em> physics! That\u2019s not necessarily a bad thing, since readers who wouldn\u2019t dream of buying 30-second Quantum Theory<\/em> or 30-second Newton<\/em> might still be attracted by 30-second Energy<\/em>.<\/p>\n

This book differs from the previous four in another way too. It\u2019s the first to include a Foreword by a \u201cbig name\u201d \u2013 in this case, Jim Al-Khalili. Apart from that, it\u2019s very much the same style as the others \u2013 about 60 double-page spreads of get-to-the-point-quickly text and lavish full-colour illustrations. As I\u2019ve said before<\/a> though, \u201c30 seconds\u201d is a slight exaggeration \u2013 it will probably take you at least 90 seconds to read each of the entries properly!<\/p>\n

In all, 30-second Energy<\/em> contains 8 contributions by me, on \u201cKinetic Energy\u201d, \u201cPotential Energy\u201d, External Combustion\u201d, \u201cInternal Combustion\u201d, \u201cTurbines\u201d, \u201cFission\u201d, \u201cFusion\u201d and \u201cBatteries\u201d.
